This word cloud will be used as the cover art in the Personal Brand learning section of my module. It breaks down some popular words to consider when building and maintaining your personal brand.
Mayer’s Multimedia Design Principles
-
Coherence principle: The graphic is free from unnecessary distracting elements. All elements, including color and size, serve a purpose.
-
Segmenting principle: The graphic breaks down the basics of what to consider when developing a personal brand.
-
Signaling principle: As with all word clouds, the words increase in size to represent importance, thus signaling to learners areas that deserve more attention.
Made-to-Stick principles
-
Simple: It is a very easy to view graphic
-
Unexpected: I think some of the word sizes may be a surprise to some learners
-
Concrete: Yes, by strictly focusing on the words that guide a personal brand, it is very concrete
-
Credible: This word cloud represents common attributes when building a personal brand, making it appear credible.
-
Emotion: Learners will want to control their own narrative (which is why Be Yourself is the largest text in the word cloud!)
-
Story: This gives students a jumping-off point when beginning to develop their personal brand.
Original

I created this image in Adobe Photoshop. The purpose is to capture the overall point of creating a personal brand and to encompass everything this lesson is attempting to teach. This image will be the course cover photo and throughout the course.
Mayer’s Multimedia Design Principles
-
Multimedia principle: With the combination of both the rubber stamp image and the tagline text, this utilizes two elements to convey the intention of this module.
-
Coherence principle: Every piece of this image contributes to the message, avoiding any unnecessary content or component that may distract from the message.
-
Contiguity principle: The tagline is placed close to the rubber stamp image, to show relevance. The “Y” in “Your” is slightly underneath the stamp, as it is a stamp, yet placed in a way that the stamp does not obscure the word.
-
Signaling principle: The box around the title “Personal Brand” draws attention to the title and focus of the lesson. The tagline, smaller and outside the box, is italicized and bolded, to continue to convey the importance of its message.
-
Personalization principle: Use of the word “Your” in the tagline directly connects the image and the lesson topic to the learner.
-
Pretraining principle: This image provides a snapshot of the entire lesson, offering key concepts (the word “personal brand” and a short description of what a personal brand is) to kick off the lesson.
Made-to-Stick principles
-
Simple: Yes- it gets to the core of what a Personal Brand is
-
Unexpected: “Your Stamp on the World” is another way to think about what you are trying to convey in a personal brand.
-
Concrete: Yes, it makes is very clear and direct regarding what the course will be about
-
Credible: Yes, it makes the idea of creating a personal brand, and its importance, very believable.
-
Emotion: Since this lesson is geared towards students, whose ultimate goal is to get a job, yes, they will care about developing their Personal Brand
-
Story: I believe that this image will inspire students to want to create their personal brand.
